Civil War Tokens |
IntroductionDuring the Civil War, a shortage of supply of small change led merchants and others to supply "coins" of a one cent size for use. These had either patriotic themes, or were issued by merchants to advertise their wares while supplying a needed item -- the tokens themselves. Thousands of different tokens were issued, with everything on them from a flag to a wine bottle to a coffin---and have been avidly collected for many years by students of the Civil War era. Civil War tokens are usually referenced as catalogued by George Fuld. History
